AN ONGOING
CATASTROPHE

In 1948, over 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes during the Nakba (catastrophe). The Nakba was the beginning of 69 years of displacement, conflict and oppression for generations of Palestinian refugees.

This year marks a number of significant anniversaries in the Palestinian struggle: 100 years since the signing of the Balfour Declaration, 50 years since the Naksa, or ‘setback’ (expulsion of Palestinians and occupation of the West Bank and Gaza), 30 years since the first Intifada and 10 years of the siege on Gaza.

In reality the Nakba is not a single event but is ongoing, and each generation since 1948 has had to bear the consequences of being a Palestinian refugee, with the current refugee population over 5 million.

Many who first witnessed the Nakba have passed away, still as refugees. For those who remain, their hope of return is being eroded daily, as they are forced to cope with poverty, disadvantage and ongoing violence.

“My grandfather, my father and I have all seen violence and sadness. I do not want that for my children.”Ahmed, Palestinian Refugee. Al-Buss Camp, Lebanon

“Thank you so much for this help. You do not know how much it helps me! I
had nothing to provide for my children on the first day of Ramadan except
old bread and that is how we used to survive. Alhamdulillah and Jazakum
Allah Khair!”Fathea, Interpal beneficiary
“During the attack on Gaza last year I was very worried about Soleyman,
the little boy from Gaza that I am sponsoring. I recently received an update
from Interpal about him. He looks happy in his pictures, his mother wrote
me a letter thanking me for their gifts, and I knew that my money was
reaching them and making a difference”S. Shahir, Interpal donor
“I felt like the other children when Interpal
gave me a school uniform.
I felt happy, not poor.”Suhad, Interpal beneficiary
“I know that my donations provide
help and ease the burden of the Palestinian
people, and I trust Interpal to facilitate this”S. Khan, Interpal donor
